Have you ever seen an actual unicorn? If not, then maybe the closest you can ever get to seeing one is through this news about an alleged unicorn-woman from China.
Liang Xiuzhen, 87 years old, is a resident of Gulyan village in Ziyang City within south-west Sichuan province. Xiuzhen has become a remarkable case for doctors as she is one of the few people who have been diagnosed with a keratinous skin tumor of horn-like appearance called “cornu cutaneum” (or cutaneous horn).
This condition started some seven or eight years ago as a simple black mole that grew on the top of her forehead. Xiuzhen’s son has also reported that his mother complained of terrible itching around the same area on her head and it became quite uncomfortable. Their chosen recourse was to make use of traditional Chinese medicine in order to cure and manage the itching. While said remedies were able to address the itch, they did not however stop the growth of the mass. They decided to leave it alone for some time in the hopes that said mass will eventually subside. Unfortunately, it didn’t subside. And worse, the growth continued until about two years ago when it had reached the size of a little finger in its place. Soon after, the elderly woman accidentally broke off the small finger-sized horn and since then, the growth somehow accelerated rapidly into a big fat horn in a matter of only six months. The tumor is now unmistakable and impossible to miss.
Now Xiuzhen has become the center of ridicule among locals and she has been dubbed as “the unicorn-woman”. Chaojun doctors however have been able to suggest ways of removing the monstrous horn involving operations and surgery. Because of this, the son of Xiuzhen has become concerned with these methods since his mother is already old and she may no longer survive such procedures especially since the horn is situated in a very sensitive area of her head. He adds, “If something goes wrong, it would be terrible.” To her son, there are certainly worse things that can happen than his mother being called the Unicorn-Woman.
